Located on the western end of Old Street sits one of London’s top bicycle and coffee bars. Dubbed Look Mum No Hands!, this simple yet perfectly designed pit stop is the brain child of Lewin, Sam and Matt. All fans of mixing caffeine with cycling, the three quit their day jobs to create a store where they could capitalize on Lewin’s café knowledge, Sam’s engineering prowess and Matt’s business know-how. After securing the well-known location and giving it a subtle re-do, the trio opened the café’s doors in April of 2010.
This combination of food and fun has led to major success for the trio. During an interview on retailinsider.com co-founding member Matt stated that only six months after opening Look Mum No Hands! broke even. In addition, food and drink turnover continues to increase steadily year on year. To further keep the store in a healthy position, they provide fans with branded t-shirts, mugs and other exciting cycling related must-have bits and bobs as well as in in their online store to cycling fans accross the globe.
They have also invested in a travelling coffee wagon that sets up shop across London and at various major biking events. Also on various occasions you might spot their pop-up café on London’s Southbank.
However, it’s not just the diversification that has resulted in such extraordinary success. The location itself is divided into two distinct areas – an outdoor patio and indoor café. Outdoors, patrons will find great seating, wonderful ambience, plenty of bike parking and a free tire pump. Indoors, one is greeted with the welcoming aroma of coffee beans combined with the other delicious smells of the cakes, snacks and, yes, even beer. Next to the food counter is the bike shop and repair center that runs seven days a week with a crew of fantastic mechanics.
The bike shop is what really sparks initial interest in the location. Unlike other cafes that are located within bike shops, Look Mum No Hands! is a café with a fully functional bike shop within. Through a large, open door visitors can watch as the mechanics fix up any issues brought to them. The workshop’s doors and walls are lined with products for purchase or to be used in the bike repair.
As for the coffee, the main choice of enjoyment for patrons, the list has been kept small and simple. The baristas craft exceptional coffees and to compliment these drinks, the staff keeps patrons satiated with a broad list of soups, stews and sandwiches. It’s a perfect blend of food and drink that make it a great stop for bikers seeking anything from a quick snack to a full meal.
If you’re ever in the London area and are searching for a bike café, look no further than Look Mum No Hands! This one-of-a-kind cafe and bike shop belongs definately on your to-visit-list whilst being in the city. Treating its patrons to a wonderful atmosphere and phenomenal customer service, it’s sure to continue fulfilling its reputation as a must-visit by anyone that loves cycling.
