Flat pedal shoe reviews have a been almost pointless over the last few years as Five Ten win every time. Whether it was the sturdy Impact or the more regularly seen Freerider the combination of comfy fitting, solid protection and that amazing, grippy rubber just beat everything else.
About 18 months ago Five Ten was bought by Adidas and to begin with Adidas let the shoe line continue as it was, but now the first pair of new trainers has arrived. The Trailcross seems to try and address the issues that people had flagged such as the old ones were a bit bulky, maybe not great for walking in and apparently they didn’t dry very well. I’ve had several pairs and luckily not suffered any of these problems as I only used them for riding in and they dried just fine (although I do wear waterproof socks in winter).
Product design always requires compromise, so although the new shoes will be lighter and easier to walk in I really hope they keep that solid sense of being tight to the pedals and stiff enough to transfer your energy. I’m already trying to find a stockist to try them out, but this could be the end of an era for Five Ten and the dawn of a new one.
